In 1839, the first public normal school in America for training teachers was established in Lexington. Later, it moved to West Newton. Framingham's proposal offering a site and building on Bare Hill brought it to Framingham Centre in 1853. The hill became Normal Hill. In 1932, normal schools became state teachers' colleges.
