What does Framingham’s current landscape have to do with Boston traffic, downtown department stores, and regional highway development in the 1920s, 30s and 1940s? A lot! Join Dr. Amy Finstein, architectural and urban historian at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, for a look at how concerns over metro-Boston’s traffic congestion and economic vitality ultimately encouraged the exponential growth of western suburbs including Framingham in the 1950s and 1960s. We’ll discuss favorite Boston retailers including Filene’s and Jordan Marsh, local roads including the MassPike, and construction of the idyllic suburban neighborhoods that so many of us now call home.
