MEMORIAL LIBRARY BUILDING
The town's first library building was completed in 1873 as a Civil War memorial and the Memorial Library. It was renamed the Edgell Memorial Library after Col. Moses Edgell died in 1875, leaving the town an endowment for the acquisition of books and works of art.
The pedestal for the statue was completed in 1880 as a gift from George Brown, and the nine foot bronze Civil War soldier, designed by sculptor Martin Millmore, was moved from inside the library hall to the pedestal where he has been standing on guard ever since. |
